What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma (also known as systemic sclerosis) is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease in which the immune system attacks and damages connective tissue throughout the body. This leads to the overproduction of collagen - the structural protein in skin and other tissues - causing progressive hardening and thickening of the affected areas.

Scleroderma is not contagious, infectious, cancerous or malignant. There are two main forms:

  • Localised scleroderma - more common in children; typically affects only the skin
  • Systemic scleroderma - more common in adults; can affect the skin, blood vessels, internal organs and the musculoskeletal system

Because scleroderma presents similarly to other autoimmune conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose and is often mistaken for other diseases. There is currently no cure, but many treatments are available to manage its symptoms.

How Scleroderma Causes Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a very common feature of scleroderma, arising through several mechanisms:

  • Salivary gland involvement - scleroderma frequently affects the minor and major salivary glands, reducing their ability to produce saliva
  • Restricted mouth opening (microstomia) - the fibrosis and tightening of facial skin can limit how far the mouth can open, complicating eating, dental care and the application of dry mouth products
  • Secondary Sjögren’s Syndrome - scleroderma patients have a higher-than-average incidence of secondary Sjögren’s, which directly attacks the moisture-producing glands
  • Medication side effects - many drugs used to manage scleroderma symptoms list dry mouth among their documented side effects
XyliMelts Dry Mouth - Berry Smoothie Flavour

How XyliMelts can help

  • Small, discreet discs that are easy to place even when mouth opening is restricted - no wide opening required for application
  • Gentle adhesion to the gum - does not require firm pressing or manual dexterity beyond initial placement
  • Provides hours of continuous moisture - reducing the frequency of product application for patients who may find repeated use difficult
  • Xylitol and cellulose gum coat the oral tissues in a soothing, sustained layer - working with whatever residual saliva function remains
  • Reduces oral bacterial load and decay risk - important as dry mouth associated with scleroderma increases dental vulnerability
  • 100% natural, free from known contra-indications - safe alongside all scleroderma medications
  • Can be used overnight - providing continuous moisture during sleep when access to water is not practical

Using XyliMelts at Night

Scleroderma patients often find overnight dry mouth particularly challenging - and the physical limitations associated with the condition (restricted movement, pain) make it harder to manage nighttime discomfort.

XyliMelts applied before sleep require minimal effort and provide continuous overnight moisture. Once in place, they work independently - no waking, no reapplication, no effort during the night. This can make a meaningful difference to sleep quality and morning comfort for scleroderma patients.
