What is Sjögren’s Syndrome?
Sjögren’s Syndrome is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the glands that produce moisture - primarily the salivary and lacrimal (tear) glands. It is one of the most common autoimmune diseases, affecting an estimated half a million people in the UK, and it disproportionately affects women.
Sjögren’s can occur as a standalone condition (primary Sjögren’s) or alongside another autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or scleroderma (secondary Sjögren’s). In either case, dry mouth and dry eyes are the hallmark symptoms.
The Impact of Sjögren’s on the Mouth
In Sjögren’s Syndrome, the salivary glands are progressively damaged, leading to significantly reduced or, in severe cases, near-absent saliva production. The consequences for oral health are serious and wide-ranging:
- The mouth becomes persistently dry, sore and vulnerable to infection
- Oral thrush (candidiasis) is common in Sjögren’s patients due to the absence of saliva’s antimicrobial properties
- Dental decay accelerates significantly - saliva normally remineralises and protects tooth enamel
- Chewing, swallowing and speaking become difficult and uncomfortable
- Mouth ulcers appear more frequently
- Dry mouth at night causes repeatedly disrupted sleep
Many Sjögren’s patients try to manage symptoms by drinking water constantly - but this provides only brief relief and does nothing to address the underlying absence of saliva or to protect the teeth and tissues.
How XyliMelts can help
- Directly stimulates whatever residual saliva function remains - rather than simply replacing saliva with water
- Cellulose gum and xylitol coat the oral cavity with a lasting, lubricating layer - mimicking some of the functions of natural saliva
- Significantly reduces the risk of dental caries - xylitol actively inhibits Streptococcus mutans, the primary decay-causing bacteria
- Helps prevent oral thrush by maintaining a less hospitable environment for candida
- Supports eating, swallowing and speaking by maintaining a lubricated oral surface
- Discreet and long-lasting - dramatically reduces the need to drink water throughout the day
- Available in mild mint and unflavoured variants - the unflavoured disc is particularly valued by Sjögren’s patients who experience taste disturbance
- Works overnight - maintaining moisture through the night when saliva production is absent and disrupted sleep is most likely
Using XyliMelts at Night
For people with Sjögren’s Syndrome, nights can be the worst part of having dry mouth. Without any natural saliva to provide baseline moisture, the mouth can become painfully dry within hours of falling asleep. Waking to drink water offers brief relief but addresses nothing in the long term.
XyliMelts are uniquely positioned to help with this. Apply two discs before bed and they will work continuously through the night - stimulating whatever saliva production remains, coating the tissues and protecting the teeth. Many Sjögren’s patients describe overnight XyliMelts use as transformative for their sleep quality and morning comfort.
